Rod Richards brings 27 years of entrepreneur, innovator, small business manager and company Director experience to the role of BEC Manager and Qld Director of BEC Australia.
Rod founded Race-Tune Engineering at age 21 and later Marine-Weld Engineering in 1991. After retiring to the Coast in 2000, business mentoring and consultancy work began in 2005 and in response to the Global Financial Crisis 2008 Rod became involved with Business Enterprise Centres.
Rod’s industry experience encompass research and development of agricultural and automated nursery transplanting machinery, patents for sawmill and log-handling equipment, exhaust and component design for high performance race engines, gold mine construction and shutdowns, marine engineering, design and fabrication of underwater experimental equipment for Australian Institute Marine Science and consulting to marine tourism operators in Townsville.
Rod is qualified in Business Management and in Training Assessment and Education.
Rod has extensive trade and machinery operators’ qualifications including Qld Government Ship Builder Accreditation.
Rod represented Australia in speedway side-car racing and is former Association president. While involved in the marine and yachting industry Rod developed sailing skills on his offshore multihull yacht ‘Australias Child’ establishing 27 offshore and International ocean sailing race records including 2 line-hours at Brisbane-Gladstone, race records at Hamilton Island Race Week, Port Moresby Coral Sea Classic and Southern Ocean Championships.
